Porters win season opener over DGN

SCORE: Lockport 20, Downers Grove North 9

RECAP: The Lockport defense was on the field for more than 85 plays and the Trojans dominated time of possession, but it was the Porters who were able to take advantage of scoring chances and take the season opener.
After a fumble on the opening possession, Lockport’s Josh Baker blocked a North field goal attempt that led to a drive where the Porters got on the board first when Ben Davis hit Payton Fernandes from 6 yards out for a score.
A second quarter score from Davis to Austin Hoffman from 22 yards away made it 13-0 and the Porters added to that when Sam Pierson rushed in from 5 yards out early in the third.
The Trojans got on the board with a safety and a 2-yard scamper by quarterback Nick Taviani in the final 5 minutes of the game.

GAME CHANGER: Lockport stopped DGN six times on fourth down in the game.

BY THE NUMBERS: Lockport: Davis – 16-18 passing, 149 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT.( None of Davis’ passes fell to the ground in the game). DGN: Taviani: 18-38 passing, 201 yards, INT, Rush TD (Taviani connected with 9 different receivers in the game.

THEY SAID IT: “The player of the game was (Josh Baker),” DGN coach John Wander said. “He caught us on our speed option, he was all over the field. I give him compliments, he played a nice football game.”
