Taylor’s Take on week 2 of football season

Our teams went 10-10 in week one, with the Niles area leading the way with a 4-0 mark.

Here are my top three games of the week:

  1. Maine South (1-0) @ Loyola (1-0). The intrigue for this game added after the Hawks upset Montini. This will be a great game to determine if the Hawks are that good or if Montini is down a bit this year. Chances are good for a Loyola win, but Maine South definitely has its attention and I could definitely see the Hawks winning, where before the season I thought it would be a longshot.
  2. Notre Dame (1-0) @ Benet (0-1). This game would be No. 1 if not for this game being a non conference game between the two ESCC foes. This has all the makings of a great one that should go down to the wire. The Redwings don’t want to go to 0-2 heading into the ESCC, so this game is probably bigger for them, especially at home.
  3. Plainfield North (1-0) @ Oswego (1-0). The only Southwest Prairie Conference team Oswego has lost to the past several years was North last year. The Panthers needed a stopped two point conversion attempt to win at Minooka last week, while the Tigers cruised to a home win. Oswego has been untouchable at home though so the Tigers need to play their best game to win.
  4. Plainfield South (1-0) @ Joliet West (0-1). I know I said top 3, but am giving a bonus game because there are so many big games this week. Last year the Tigers beat the Cougars, but the Cougars were the team that made the playoffs. This is a big game for both teams playoff aspirations, and the winner will definitely have the better chance.

Most intriguing game:

Plainfield Central (0-1) @ Plainfield East (1-0). The Wildcat losing streak has reached 30 games, but they looked more competitive against Plainfield North last week. Meanwhile, the Bengals had a hard time with Joliet Central, which hasn’t won a game since being split with Joliet West at the beginning of the decade. The Bengals won 6-0 on a defensive touchdown. That has to give the Wildcats some added hope heading into this game, but I expect a young East squad to play much better offensively this week. Another close, low-scoring game is what I am anticipating.
