    Cathy M. Rosenthal|Updated Feb 19, 2020

Dear Cathy, I am having a problem with my terrier who has many toys but insists on burying both of his orange toys. When I dig them up in the yard, he seems sad and embarrassed. This has been going on for several years. Is there any explanation for this? I have been asking around about this, but so far no one has been able to explain this behavior. - Ann Marie, Fort Lauderdale, Florida Dear Ann Marie, Dogs generally bury things they covet and want to save for later, such as...

Dear Cathy, I have three female dogs. Sassy the oldest one is 11 and acts like an old lady. Star is 5 and very energetic. They both are good girls and very loving. A couple of weeks ago, my neighbor gave me Sarina, a 7-week-old puppy who is very energetic and loving. My problem is, Sarina is teething, and anything and everything goes in her mouth. She has a teething bone and lots of toys. Sassy growls at her if she comes close and has even snapped at her twice. Thankfully, the...

Dear Cathy, In regard to your response to Howard in Oceanside, New York, you said you have never seen a plant die from dogs peeing on it? How about female dogs peeing on your lawn creating burn spots of dead grass? Never? I am with Howard. I work very hard on my lawn and property. People walking their dogs have no respect for others. While you can clean up poop, how do you clean up pee that brings other dogs to the smell and then they relieve themselves there? I have had...

Dear Cathy, Our rescue dog has been diagnosed with kidney problems. He is only 4 and takes medication for his condition. The vet does not want us to restrict his water. The problem is, when left alone during the day, he will pee in the same spot at the end of the day. This seems to happen as we pull up or he hears us at the door. On rare occasions, he is able to control his bladder. Is there something we can do to train/encourage him to wait until he gets outside to relieve...

I have a 7-year-old male Shih Tzu named Chipper. After eating breakfast and supper, Chipper will lick the rug in the living room. I find it difficult to break him of this habit. Why does he do this? Is it because he is bored? I did not have him as a pup. I got him when he was about 3. I am open to any suggestions that you offer on how I can break him of this habit. - Norman, Plainview, New York Dear Norman, Excessive licking can result from boredom, allergies, tooth or gum...

Dear Cathy, We've always had multiple dogs and now own a black lab who is 9 months old. She is the easiest puppy in the world to potty train, but I have never had a dog chew so much. We have toys and chewies all over the floor and in a toy box, and yet I have lost three pairs of shoes, Christmas decorations, gloves, plants and baskets. I have a spray that is supposed to taste awful that I am spraying on things and also in her mouth, so she realizes it is nasty. I don't want...

I took in a 10-year old indoor/outdoor cat who needed a home. I am a senior and she is the only pet, but I have had cats before. After about a week, she started becoming acclimated to me and the condo. I was told she could not be picked up and held. She allows quick head and belly rubs and has become a lap and bed cat at her discretion. The problem is, she attacks me mostly on the arms by leaping at me without warning. She has drawn blood several times. I know not to provoke...

Dear Cathy, This summer, my family adopted a teacup Shorkiepoo. He was 8 months old when he joined our family, which includes two older dogs. He has mastered peeing on wee-wee pads, but he is inconsistent with his poops on the paper. He is a happy, playful pooch, but scooping up little poops all over my home is not acceptable. Please advise on correcting this situation. - Lisa, Lido Beach, New York Dear Lisa, When you're not home, consider keeping him in an x-pen with his pee...

This may be a silly question, but do you know if nature gives feral cats anything special to keep them from freezing in very cold weather? I know they survive, but how? - Dick, Westbury, New York Dear Dick, It's not a silly question; it's a great question. I'm afraid though, there is nothing in the wild that protects feral cats from the harsh realities of winter. They don't hibernate or store food for the winter. As domesticated animals, they are utterly dependent on humans...

Dear Cathy, My Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix drinks his water much too quickly. He starts coughing and wheezing as the water goes down the wrong pipe. I hold him on my lap, hold his chest and slap his back. It helps but only after much coughing. Any suggestions that might help the little guy? He drinks from a raised water bowl alongside his food bowl. Water is changed a few times daily. - Larry, Westbury, New York Dear Larry, There are special bowls designed to slow down...

  • How to deter dog from digging holes in back yard

    Updated Nov 27, 2019

Dear Cathy, My grandson adopted two rescue dogs. The second dog he adopted had been hit by a car and left on the road to die. She was found by a rescue provider, taken to a vet, nursed back to health and was fostered by my grandson. She was such a sweetie that she became part of the family. She gets along well with the older dog. The problem is, a few months ago, she started to dig holes in the back yard. This has become an ongoing habit. Can you give any insight into why...

Dear Cathy, I have a 5-year-old mixed breed dog. Most of the time, he's a lovable smooch. When I take him to the dog park, he plays with the other dogs and runs and really has a good time. But whenever I have him on a leash, if he sees another dog on a leash or a human in our vicinity, he goes nuts with an aggressive stance, barking and pulling. What can I do about it? - Dennis, Las Vegas Dear Dennis, Leash reactivity describes aggressive behaviors seen while a dog is on a...

Dear Cathy, I have two Japanese Chin brothers that have just turned 2. I have French doors to my patio that are off my family room, giving full view to the outside, which includes a long driveway to my unattached garage. The problem starts when I pull into the driveway as I return home. I can see them going crazy jumping on the glass and scratching it. By the time I walk from the garage to the house, they are still jumping and scratching on the glass. These doors are not the...

Dear Cathy: My Maltese, Tim, is 10 months old. I feed him wet and dry food on a paper plate. He eats a little and then I have to put the food on the floor where he eats some, goes away and then comes back and eats most of it. I tried using a regular dinner plate with the same results. This is my fifth dog and they all ate off paper plates without a problem. We have been crate/potty training him for three months. He seems to get the pooping outside part, but we're not sure...

Dear Cathy, We got our third miniature schnauzer two months ago at 9 weeks old. We have his crate in our kitchen, in which he has not soiled. After the first two weeks there were no mishaps in the kitchen, so we introduced him to the rest of the house. Right away he went into the den and took a poop on the new rug. Next it was the dining room rug - three times on different corners. We thought he might smell our old dog, so we kept him out of the area, and I deep cleaned the...

Dear Cathy, My son and his 1-year-old dog, a basenji mix, live with us, but he keeps Roxy in his room most of the time when he's not working. I have a 9-year-old pug who is very meek. We also have a 6-year-old cat that at first ignored Roxy. Roxy wants to play with her, but my cat doesn't want to play with Roxy. She gets mad and chases her and has her claws out and Roxy won't leave her alone. She barks and jumps all over the place. I have to take my cat into the bedroom and...

Take dog to vet to find out source of itching By Cathy M. Rosenthal Tribune Content Agency Dear Cathy, We have a very smart 8-year-old old pit. She is healthy and has always been playful and well-trained. She was trained to do her business in one area of the back yard. But suddenly she is skittish when we take her out and she seems to fight doing a bowel movement. Sometimes, she waits so long she can't hold it and goes before going out. Other times she will do it outside, but...
