Jake Farley, a native of Plainfield, IL, and graduate of Plainfield North High School, is one of 10 members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team who were selected All-American Collegiate Athletic Conference for their performances during the 2019 season. Three of those Warhawks garnered major awards from the ACAA. The last time Bolingbrook was in the IHSA Class 8A quarterfinals was 2014 after defeating Oswego 31-28 in overtime to get past the second round. Saturday night, the Raiders advanced again with another win over Oswego – only this time it took two overtime periods and the Raiders won 31-30. The teams traded first-play touchdowns in the first extra period and after Antonio King scored the go ahead touchdown to open the second OT, Oswego answered, but instead of sending the g...
In their IHSA Class 5A second-round playoff game with undefeated Mt. Zion on Saturday, the defending Class 5A State Champions from Joliet Catholic Academy got off to a quick start. The Hilltoppers opened up a 27-0 lead at the half and cruised to a 27-14 victory. With the win, the Hilltoppers (8-3) will host the Indians of Mascoutah (8-3) at Memorial Stadium next Saturday in a Class 5A Elite 8 quarterfinal game. Two minutes into the game, Hilltopper sophomore quarterback Aidan Voss connected with senior wide receiver John Ersh...
After watching Edwardsville (8-3) score the last 10 points of the first half, the host Minooka went to its halftime locker room trailing the Tigers 17-14. That was all the scoring Edwardsville got in Saturday's Class 8A second-round playoff game. When a football team has not one but three Illinois High School Football Coaches Association's Hall of Fame coaches half-time adjustments that lead to victory have been a norm for the Indians. John Belskis, along with associate coaches Terry McCombs and Bob Williams were men of few...
Maine South coach Dave Inserra has been around a long time - 19 years to be exact. He has led the Hawks to four state championships and three second-place finishes. Along the way, Inserra has coached a lot of talented football players. Friday night, he said good-bye to Peter Skoronski - the one he calls the best he ever coached. "He is a true All-American and the greatest player I have ever coached," Inserra said of the two-way lineman. Skoronski's career and the career of...
Notre Dame's Matt Murphy had one thought on his mind late in Saturday's game against Barrington. After missing a field goal and a point-after-attempt, Murphy steadied himself and took a short pause before drilling a 32-yard field goal that would be the difference in a 23-21 win over the Broncos in a Class 8A first-round playoff game in Niles. Murphy's field goal with three minutes left in regulation padded the Dons' lead to 23-14. The Broncos (6-4) scored a late touchdown,...
For the second consecutive year, Joliet Catholic Academy travelled to the Peoria suburbs for its IHSA Class 5A first-round football game. In 2018, the road to Champaign began for the eventual Class 5A State Champion Hilltoppers in the Peoria suburb of Metamora. The Hilltoppers, overwhelmed the four-time champion Redbirds, 49-20. On Saturday in Morton, the defending Class 5A champs and 2019 Chicago Catholic League/East Suburban Catholic White champion Hilltoppers demolished...

The Flyers improve to 22-4, 8-3 GLVC while the Bearcats drop to 11-14, 4-7 GLVC. Lewis fell behind 3-0 to begin the match before coming back to even things at 10 on a kill by Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs). The Flyers took the lead for a good with a 6-3 run. McKendree cut the lead to 16-15 on a...
In a complete turnaround from its 2018 season where Plainfield North finished 4-5, the Tigers rebounded and went (6-3, 5-2) in the 2019 regular season. Unfortunately for first year head coach Anthony Imbordino, that wasn't enough. The Tigers season came to a close last Friday night when they took on the Fremd Vikings with a 19-0 defeat. "We just had a lot of missed opportunities, they're a really good football team and their record shows that," Imbordino said. "We had a great...
From 2001-06, Lisle advanced to the IHSA football playoffs every season for six years in a row. From that point on, the Lions advanced three times heading into this season, but never two years in a row. That changed this season, when Lisle qualified for the postseason, it was the first time in 13 seasons the Lions have qualified for the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. "It was a great season," said Lisle coach Paul Parpet. "For the first time since 2006 Lisle has been to the...
Friday night's IHSA Class 8A First-Round game between Minooka and Joliet West was also a de facto Southwest Prairie Conference Championship Game as the SPC East champion Tigers (4-6) invaded Minooka to take on the SPC West champion Indians. The Indians were coming off a monumental SPC West championship game victory at Oswego (9-1) and were facing a Joliet West team it defeated 49-7 in the opening week of the season. The Tigers took the opening kickoff and drove 83 yards, took...

In the state's top game of Week 9, the Associated Press' Class 8A No. 6 Minooka (9-0, 5-0) traveled to No.8 Oswego (8-1, 4-1), on a picture-perfect fall evening. The Southwest Prairie West championship game was also a battle for the top seed in the IHSA Class 8A Football playoffs, which begin next weekend. Minooka was No. 1 and Oswego was No. 2, in Class 8A seeding after eight weeks. With the game deadlocked at 21-21, with 9 minutes, 19 seconds remaining, Minooka took over on the Indians' 31-yard line. Led by senior...
Over the last eight-plus Southwest Prairie Conference seasons, Oswego High School has won eight consecutive SPC football championships. In that time period, the Panthers have amassed a 66-2 SPC record. The only Panther SPC losses were to Plainfield North 12-7 in 2011 and 37-25 in 2015. On September 28, the Tigers almost did it to the Panthers again falling 14-13. On Friday night, at historic Ken Pickerill Stadium on the campus of Oswego High School, the Panthers (8-0, 4-0) will shoot for their ninth consecutive SPC football...
Downers Grove North setter Grace Malone's senior season has been bittersweet, to say the least. She is one of only three returning seniors - one fewer than should be on the roster. Malone inherited the starting setter role from classmate Beth Dunlap, who died on February 22, three days after being struck by an alleged inebriated driver while crossing the street outside of school. Dunlap was a Division I recruit who guided the Trojans to their best season ever last fall,...
Looking at the scoreboard at Legends Field on the campus of Notre Dame College Prep and seeing a 21-0 loss by the Dons does not in any way tell the tale of the game. Notre Dame was without standout running back Julian Schurr, who will be sidelined for at least one more week with a shoulder injury. "It is not a 21-0 game, but we didn't get what we needed to get offensively," said coach Mike Hennessey. "One loss will not define the season, but it is tough to experience a loss af...
In a game that was significant for both teams with a conference title on the line, Joliet West defeated Plainfield South 22-13. The Tigers, who entered the game one game behind Plainfield South and Plainfield East, needed the win to keep their playoff hopes alive. A South win would have locked up the Southwest Prairie Conference East Division title, however, the West win gives the Tigers a shot at the title and a playoff berth, despite a best-case 4-5 overall record. The...
When the Oct. 15 volleyball game between Minooka and Plainfield Central ended, the scoreboard said the visiting Indians had won 27-25, 25-17. The real winner, however, was Addy Boggs. Addy is a student at Circle Center Grade School in Yorkville and has been diagnosed with Batten Disease CLN3 - a very rare, genetic disease that to this point has no cure. Of the many symptoms of Batten Disease, one is vision loss, which she is already starting to experience. For the past seven...

Although Plainfield Central and Romeoville will not make the playoffs in the 2019 season, Friday night was not an indicator of the two teams records. Four quarters was not enough for one of the teams to come away with the victory. Even though the Wildcats (1-6, 1-5) eventually prevailed 16-13, the Spartans (1-6, 1-5) did not go down without a fight. "I thought our defense was great in the first half," said coach Justin Trovato. "In the second half Central got going a little...
Last year, Joliet Central made history against Joliet West. For the first time in 29 years, the Steelmen beat the Tigers 20-9. This year was a little different. "Well [Central] is obviously in our district and after last year it did feel good to get this one," said West coach Bill Lech. "We came out in the second half, not really sure how we got there but I'll take it." Not knowing how each team got there might be an understatement as the final score was 24-0, but West only...
After dominating the Central Suburban League's North Division for years, Glenbrook North was reassigned to the CSL South for 2019. On Friday night, the Spartans hosted Maine South on a cold Friday night in Northbrook. Welcome to the CSL South. In the now 18-year tenure of coach, Dave Inserra, the Hawks have lost only once in the CSL South - winning 16 CSL South championships with an 86-1 league record. The Hawks entered Friday's game, with a 15-game conference winning-streak....
Closing out the 2019 regular season, with Loyola, at St. Rita on October 18th and at home against the defending Class 7A State Champions from Nazareth, Saturday, was the first of three fact-finding encounters for Benet Academy. On a sunny, crisp Saturday afternoon in Wilmette, Loyola (5-2), beat the Redwings 46-14. The Ramblers led 22-0 after one quarter and 36-0 at the half. Loyola's Aidan Brownlee returned the opening kickoff to the Benet 45 yard line. Rambler leading-rusher...
The 2019-20 University of St. Francis men's bowling team is now ranked tied for fifth in the latest (Oct. 9) NAIA Men's Bowling Coaches' Top 10 Poll, which was released this Thursday (Oct. 10).
