Mazzochi tours local food pantry, encourages constituents to be thankful and give back

To recognize the efforts of local good Samaritans serving those in need, State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) recently toured the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry.

“So many families and individuals face challenges--divorce, job loss, mental health, catastrophic illness. Our community is best measured by how we take care of the most vulnerable among us. We are so lucky that the 47th district is filled with great organizations and volunteers such as the Elmhurst-Yorkfield food pantry, which serves several hundred neighbors each,” Rep. Mazzochi said.

From its humble beginnings in 1983 at the Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, the pantry has operated out of a 2,500 square foot facility since 2016. The pantry serves most towns in the 47th district; and partners with the Illinois Food Bank, as well as local donors, to keep their shelves stocked with a variety of foods that can feed a family a month at a time.

Mazzochi was a supporter of Illinois House Resolution 109, which designates November as Food Pantry Donation Month.

Rep. Mazzochi, who contributed her own donation of soups, foods, and paper goods, explained that she “wanted to draw attention to the great work being done by our local food pantries and it couldn’t be more appropriate to do so just before Thanksgiving and Giving Tuesday.”

Giving Tuesday falls on December 3rd this year and as a movement for good it is designed to kick off the charitable season. This unofficial holiday is appropriately celebrated every year on the Tuesday after the blessings of Thanksgiving and the shopping “holidays” of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. “When you see what you are blessed with on Thanksgiving and take a moment to be thankful for what you have, I hope everyone can think about what can be done to help those who are struggling to get by this holiday season and put food on the table. The Elmhurst-Yorkfield Pantry is a great option in this season of giving.”
