Popular coffee and breakfast place set to open this yearon Route 59
Plainfield expects to welcome a Dunkin' Donuts to the south side of town later this year.
While the coffee and fast breakfast mainstay has locations on the other ends of town and neighboring municipalities, it's now "time to make the donuts" for downtown and south end.
A house that stands at 15719 S. Route 59 will be razed and developed into the doughnut shop, which will contain a drive through. The site is one of four residential-scale parcels that front St. Mary's Immaculate Church.
"This is clearly an area in transition from (residential) to commercial development along Route 59," said Plainfield Director of Planning Jonathan Proulx.
Village staffers met with representatives from St. Mary's before approving the project. Proulx said the parish was supportive of development, but had concerns about traffic through the church parking lot.
As a result, the new Dunkin will only have a "right turn in - right turn out" entrance to Route 59 and will not connect to the church lot.
"So vehicles going south on Route 59 can't turn east," Village Trustee Cally Larson noted.
There will also be a fence between the church and doughnut shop properties.
Dunkin' Donuts is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and operates over 12,000 locations worldwide.
