On a cool Memorial Day morning in Downers Grove, the West Suburban Conference Silver Division champions from Hinsdale Central squared off with the WSC Gold champions from Downers Grove South. No WSC championship game implications were involved in the game.
Hinsdale Central (19-3) exploded for six runs in the top of the third inning for a 6-0 lead and held off the host Mustangs (23-3) for a 7-6 WSC crossover win.
After the Red Devils scored six in the top of the third inning, the Mustangs pulled within 6-2 on a RBI double from senior Matt Scolan. A Red Devil miscue led to the second Mustang run in the bottom of the third inning.
Hinsdale Central picked up an unearned run in the top of the fourth to extended their lead to 7-2.
The Mustangs pulled within 7-4 on another Red Devil miscue and an RBI single from senior Maxx Palenik.
Mustangs' 6-foot-7 junior reliever Nate Waterman fired two hitless innngs of relief, blanking the Red Devils in the fifth and sixth innings.
Mustang AJ Taylor (3-for-4) pulled the 'Stangs within 7-5 on a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mustang senior Kyle Fenner (3-for-4) got the Mustangs within 7-6, with a clutch two-out RBI single. The 'Stangs got no closer and fall 7-6.
"Hinsdale Central was just a little better than we were today," Downers Grove South coach Darren Orel said.
